1. Education and Experience:
These days it can be quite easy to become a personal trainer at a course over a weekend. It is very important to look at both qualifications and experience when choosing your trainer. You can qualify your trainer by listening to how he or she answers your questions and by asking for references. Ask previous or current clients how their experience with that trainer has been in terms of making progress, schedule flexibility, thought put into each workout, and anything else that may be very important to you.
2. Setting goals:
Before your first session a trainer should sit down with you to discuss your goals, previous fitness experience, and previous injury/health history. It is important for the trainer to get a good idea of your capabilities and wants/needs in order to put together an appropriate program.
Once a trainer understands what your goals and abilities are he or she can set up a program for you that incorporates both your goals and needs. Since everybody is unique it is important for your program to be unique to you as well!
4. Compatibility and Communication
It is important to find a trainer whose personality works well with yours. You want to be motivated, so if you do not get along well with your trainer, how well do you think he or she will be able to motivate you? You can usually tell in the first meeting if you two will mesh well or not. Communication is also key, if you aren’t completely comfortable with your trainer how will you tell him or her if you aren’t happy with something in your session?
Make sure you qualify your trainer with all of the above first and foremost; however, you want to find something that fits into your budget. It is generally more cost effective to purchase packages rather than single sessions at a time. You should expect to pay $65-$95/session for personal training. Often though, gyms offer other economical options such as group training or partner training.
Remember that by looking after your body now, you are making a future investment into your health and quality of life!
