Starting a new job/career is always nerve wracking, you never truly know what to expect until you are fully submerged into the position and all that entails. I had seriously contemplated applying for the position of Administrative Assistant at GWA prior to my application. After long deliberation, fighting with myself over the possible pros and cons of working yet again in another gym type facility, I came to the conclusion to stop by GWA, take a peek at the facility and hand in my resume. What could it hurt?
I was greeted by a friendly face and smile and directed to the owner right away, he accepted my resume and told me he would review it and reach out to me via email if he felt I could be a possible candidate for the position. About a week went by without so much as a word, my hope dwindling away as the hours and days went by, then finally an email! Troy invited me back to GWA for a formal interview and tour of the gym. Of course the interview went as one could hope, which is why I find myself writing this blog piece today.
After two weeks of working at GWA I can honestly say I am glad I made the decision to apply for the position and even more so that I was brought on to the team. Everyone here has been more than helpful, courteous, motivating, patient and understanding. They have shown me in such a short time, what team work truly means and that is something that can be hard to come by in the work place. After working previously in two other big chain gym facilities, I had promised myself I would never again be caught working for another fitness establishment. I suppose I just cannot stay away.
Fitness is nothing new to my life. As I have previously stated, I have worked in other gym facilities before; but my experience does not just stop there. I have a 4 year old son and after giving birth to him I had gained quite a substantial amount of weight, especially for my petite frame. For the 3 years following his birth, I was so fixated on growing up and being a mom that I neglected my overall health, mind, body and spirit. It took “a series of unfortunate events” for me to take charge of my life and make a change for not only myself but my son, and that started with fitness. I purchased a membership at a gym and started lifting weights six days a week. It became a part of my week to week routine and I quickly saw results that I never could have dreamed. I did not want to stop there; I wanted more out of this. I then made the decision to enter into my very first bodybuilding competition in March 2015 where I placed 4th out of a large and competitive group of girls. This placing has now qualified me for Provincials in the coming spring/summer of 2016 where I hope to qualify for Nationals. Currently I am in my “off-season” prep, striving to build more mass, strengthen weak points and overall build a better package for provincials. Unfortunately, I have fallen off the wagon with my training and diet over the past few months with juggling two jobs, co-parenting logistics and other life occurrences, but with working at GWA I have found my “mojo” again thanks to the team here and my training has commenced yet again. No more excuses! It’ll be slow to start as I jump back into the rhythm of things but I know with the added motivation from the team here at GWA, my boyfriend and family, I will accomplish what I am striving for and continue to set new goals and achieve them. I am looking forward to my new journey here at Groundwork Athletics and cannot wait to see what the future has in store for us all!
“Starting a new job/career is always nerve wracking.” The personal trainers, management and clients here at Groundwork have defied my previous statement and I couldn’t be any more pleased to be a part of this team.
