You can call it a comeback! 2 years ago I had a back discectomy to relieve a pinched nerve in my back. The disc had been slipping in and out since I fractured it as a kid, but about 5 years ago it stopped slipping back in and my leg started to get numb so we had to get surgery.
Not being able to play with my two boys was good motivation to get back into some kind of shape. I hadn’t done a workout in almost 5 years. When I came into GWA after the operation, I had just graduated from using two canes to hobble around with. Grunting while doing weightless squats was humbling to say the least.
I started training with Jon doing some simple movements. He then passed me on to see Big Al. The first year with Al was all stabilizion movement exercises meant to tighten the core. Al kept me in-line as I have arthritis in the back and very little cushion between the vertebrae, so any off-move hurts… and sets me back so I can’t even put on socks the next day. We worked at it really slowly, and after a year, we had a bit of a breakthrough. We could actually start doing some “exercise” on top of the movement drills! Also I had been suffering with a significant amount of pain for a long time, but it was going away. I was able to wean myself off some serious pain meds.
Things were progressing so well that around Christmas time I agreed to try and run a half marathon for my cousins 40th Birthday in Nashville. I woke up on race day to an absolute monsoon, but after an hour delay due to Thunderstorms we were off. I wound through the hilly Nashville streets, listened to live bands play every mile, battled 85 degree humidity and got served beer at the halfway point. While I didn’t set any speed records (I ran a full marathon quicker 13 years ago!)….. I FINISHED, and was even able to get up and put my socks on the next day!
