Ever Miss Achieving a Goal?

Jon Bula October 8, 2014

Believe it or not there have been numerous times where I've fallen short on achieving a goal. What exactly do you do?  Missing a goal can be quite frustrating and even cause you to quit whatever it was you were doing or trying to achieve.  I recently found myself in that position and after a few days of feeling frustrated and a bit angry, finally decided to use the situation as a learning experience. Once I accepted the fact that the goal wasn't achieved I found the following to help a lot:

  • Look back on all the situations leading up to when the goal was supposed to be achieved, write down anything that may have happened to you that got you off track.
  • Don't blame anyone for the miss, accept it as your responsibility.
  • Analyze what you did to try and achieve the goal.
  • Ask yourself what part of the plan you didn't stick to, or maybe there was a lack of planning to begin with.
  • Was the goal actually achievable?
  • Do you need to modify the goal in order for you to be able to achieve it with your current lifestyle and way of doing things?
  • Finally, make a new plan and goal.  Start the process fresh and new.

Like anything in life, we all tend to learn best from our failures.  Setting goals is great, but if you fail don't let it get you too down.  Learn from the experience and adapt.  Look inwards and be truthful with yourself.  I did this and now I'm ready to reach for a new more streamlined target, feeling excited and armed with the new found knowledge and experience that failure presented me.
