In my blog this month I thought I would write about our other company, Factory Hockey Player Development (www.factoryhockey.ca), in case anyone was wondering what it is all about.
Jon and I have been training hockey players off ice for close to 15 years. Seven years ago we started to train a current NHL player, Jeff Tambellini, who at the time was with the NY Islanders and then the Vancouver Canucks. He was so impressed with our program that two years later he bought in as an owner and things have really taken off since. We have had one other partner join in Ilan Cumberbirch—the former Junior A and CIS player who spent last season playing pro in Europe.
A week snapshot: Our players train either off ice, on ice or both with us now. In order to prepare for their upcoming seasons they spend approx 10+ hours a week off ice training, 3+ hours a week on ice, and countless hours preparing food. The pros tend to train for 12-16 weeks depending on the length of their season and younger players put in 8-12. It is a real commitment, but, to exceed at the game of hockey this is what it takes.
The back side of the last paragraph is a ton of prep work by us. Workouts to be pre planned, ice to be booked, staff to be hired, parents to be informed, players to be made to feel comfortable and taken care of and on and on. It really is a lot of fun !
FHPD now boasts three locations (Vancouver, Prince George, Powell River). In Vancouver we have 30+ players training with us off ice and 70+ that skate on ice. We have created one of the best pro skates in the Lower Mainland and players come from all over to get on the sheet with us. This upcoming fall we will be expanding our brand to include in season training (essentially making FHPD a year round business) and working towards finding a separate location for the off ice strength & conditioning. We’ve just grown too big for GWA !
So the next time you are at GWA there could be NHL players on the other side pushing hard OR future NHL players !!
