"Give it a rest!" - By Joslynn Beach
As many of you saw on the event board, I was set to participate in the Spartan Race on Saturday,June 6th. Unfortunately, I had to forgo the race due to catching a cold earlier in the week. Can you say BUMMER?!
The days leading up I was talking myself into it, trying to get as much rest as I could, convincing myself that if I just took it easy I could push myself to complete the feat on Saturday. Well, Saturday morning came and it was clear to me that I had to admit defeat before I even started. As a competitive person, it was frustrating to make that decision; however, I believe that listening to your body is an important part of training and making progress.
If you are feeling under the weather and your gut tells you that continuing on might leave you worse than when you started, give it a rest! You should be setting aside one full rest day a week to allow for proper recuperation. Next time you find yourself running close to empty in the tank, take a guilt-free day off and rest! It's a necessary part of your progress as not just your muscles but your nervous system also needs time off to recover.
In closing, let's take a moment to congratulate Stephanie Masterman (and any other clients I'm unaware of!) who DID participate in the Spartan Race and crushed it. Way to go!!!
