What Is Stopping You?
We deal with so many people on a personal level in our business with one obvious component being their physical well being. When I was on the training floor coaching our clients it always surprised me how closed off many were to trying something new physically. By that I mean things like: sign up for a 10km, half, or full marathon, learn to swim and sign up for a triathlon, learn to kayak and try a short race, take up road or mountain biking…..
General excuses I heard:
I’m too slow
I don’t have time
I could never do that
I’m not interested in that
I’ll get injured
I have an old injury so couldn’t
Only athletic people do that
I’m too slow- no one cares except you in your own head. Get over that and it’s a non issue.
I don’t have time- I know a lawyer who worked full time with 2 young children who trained for and completed his 1st Ironman. Yes it takes major commitment (4 am mornings of training and a supportive partner) but it can be done.
I’m scared- that is good, this is how you grow and experience things in life. It will pass.
I could never do that- change your attitude and change your outcomes. Guaranteed you could with the right plan and mindset.
I’m not interested in that- tougher one to push back against. Have you actually taken the time to look into the event vs just assuming? Usually I also ask what are they actually interested in then?
I’ll get injured- with the right plan, progression, and preparation the odds of this come way down.
I have an old injury so couldn’t- can be a legit excuse. Have you exhausted every angle to deal with this?
Only athletic people do that- go watch an Ironman, marathon anything and take a look at the bodies and movements of people. So untrue.
If you really want to you can talk yourself through any excuse you have and give it a go. Why not? What do you have to lose—nothing. Its just life so why not try some things because one day you won’t be able to (dead).
